History of Olympics

Greece’s capital city Athens hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. But even then, due to a lack of facilities, issues with organization, and poor player involvement, the Olympics did not evolve into many positive forms over the years. Despite these issues, the players who had little interest in sports gradually succeeded in achieving their Olympic objective.

  • French educator and historian Pierre Frede, Baron de Coubertin. Pierre Frede is credited with founding the International Olympics and the contemporary Olympic Games.
  • After the Roman ruler Theodosius shut down the Olympics 1500 years previously, the Olympic Games—a tradition lost to ancient Greece—were resurrected in Athens. These games, which took place from April 6 to 15, included 241 participants from 14 different nations.
  • Athletics, fencing, cycling, swimming, gymnastics, weightlifting, wrestling, shooting, and tennis were among the 43 events in which participants competed.
  • Like the old competitions, only male participants took part in the 1896 Athens Games. It was the only sport in which there were no female participants.
  • The champions of these Games received medals for the first time. These medals weren’t any gold ones. Players who finished in first place received a silver medal, an olive branch, and a diploma. Players who finished in second place received a copper medal, a Kalpavriksha branch, and a diploma.

Women participate in the Olympic Games

when the 1896 Summer Olympics were held. Women were then prohibited from taking part in them. However, women competed in the Maha Kumbh Games for the first time at the 1900 Second Olympic Games in Paris.
Neelima Ghosh, who was just 17 years old when she made history as the first Indian woman to compete in the Olympics, was the nation’s first athlete. In 1952, Neelima Ghosh participated in the 100-meter sprint and the 80-meter hurdles.
