After 18 years of marriage, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, have announced their separation. The two said that they came to their decision after “many meaningful and challenging conversations” in messages shared on Instagram.
In 2002 Montréal, when he met Sophie Grégoire. They were united in marriage in 2005, and now they are the joyful parents of Hadrien, Ella-Grace, and Xavier.
According to the Liberal Party website for Grégoire Trudeau, he graduated from the University of Montréal with a degree in communications and afterwards worked in sales and advertising before becoming a reporter for television and radio. Last year, Grégoire Trudeau said on Instagram that he and his wife had “navigated through sunny days, heavy storms, and everything in between and it ain’t over.”
On Wednesday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on his Instagram account that he and his wife Sophie were divorcing. We have decided to split, Trudeau added, following “many meaningful and difficult conversations” with Sophie. As always, he added, “We continue to be a close family with a deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and will continue to build.”For the sake of their children’s safety, he requested that their privacy be maintained. The couple “have signed a legal separation agreement,” the prime minister’s office stated in a statement on Wednesday.
According to the statement, “They have worked to ensure that all necessary legal and ethical steps about their decision to separate have been taken, and will continue to do so going forward.”
Mr. Trudeau is the second Prime Minister to announce a separation while in office. His father, Pierre Trudeau, separated from his wife Margaret in 1979, and the two divorced in 1984. Justin Trudeau channeled the star power of his Liberal icon father when he first won office in 2015. Scandals, voter fatigue, and economic inflation have taken a toll on his popularity after eight years in power.
The second prime minister to do so while in power is Mr. Trudeau.
