It may take time to start Elon Musk’s Starlink and Amazon Web’s satellite internet services in India. The Department of Telecommunications has given a big demand to both these companies. Recently, the government had sought advice from stakeholders on spectrum allocation, expenses and other issues. The government is going to start the spectrum allocation process soon.
DoT made this demand
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has requested to complete the security agreement soon regarding Elon Musk’s Starlink and Amazon’s satellite services. The Department of Telecommunications has approved Airtel and Jio’s Eutelsat Oneweb satellite internet services. DoT has asked both the companies to submit documents related to the security parameters required to proceed with the application process.
According to ET’s report, these two companies have not yet given any information about security compliance. The Department of Telecommunications has written a letter to both these companies. An official associated with this matter said that a reminder will be sent by the government after waiting for a few days. Only if these companies accept all the security conditions, their applications will proceed.
Instructions for sharing documents
The official said that there are many areas in the country in terms of security. In such a situation, satellite companies will have to share data, coverage area and other information with the government. Only after this the government will allow these companies to provide services in India. In October 2022, Elon Musk applied for the Global Mobile Personal Communication Satellite Service (GMPCS) license. At the same time, last year Amazon accepted the application.
